The details you need to know about Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 is a major upgrade compared to the older Switch models.
The gaming console has a large, built-in 7.9-inch LCD screen that supports 1080p with 120 Hz and HDR. Inside the screen is an upgraded and powerful system circuit that, together with the included docking station, can drive games in up to 4K resolution with 60 Hz on an external screen or TV.
It also comes with expanded storage of 256 GB (up from 32 GB in the original model) and redesigned controllers.
The controllers are called Joy-Con 2 and are a big step forward compared to the old model. The controllers have become larger, more ergonomic, and attach to the gaming console with magnets. In addition, they function as pointing devices like a regular computer mouse in games that support it.
To make it extra clear which physical games are designed for Switch 2, Nintendo has chosen to make the memory cards red. This makes them easy to identify next to the older games for existing Switch models, as they are black.
Shorter battery life despite a larger battery
Nintendo has upgraded the battery in Switch 2. It has a higher capacity to match the higher performance and load it has on the battery.
- Switch 2: 5,220 mAh
- Switch: 4,310 mAh
With an increase of 910 mAh, this means that the new gaming console has just over 20 percent higher battery capacity. Despite the higher capacity, the battery life has decreased significantly.
- Switch 2: approximately 2 to 6.5 hours
- Switch: approximately 4.5 to 9 hours
It takes about 3 hours to charge the battery when the gaming console is in sleep mode. The new Joy-Con 2 controllers take about 3.5 hours to charge and have a battery life of approximately 20 hours.
