Apple has launched the new generation of iPhone models – iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. As previously rumoured, they have a number of major improvements such as higher performance, better cameras and longer battery life.

Here are the new iPhone models for 2019/2020

iPhone 11: iPhone 11 is the successor to the iPhone XR with a 6.1-inch LCD screen. This model is the smallest of the three new phones with two rear cameras instead of three like its larger siblings. It is also the cheapest model with an approximate price from SEK 9,195.

What are the biggest new features of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max?

As usual, the new iPhone models have lots of improvements. Here we go through some of the major new features Apple revealed during its big event.

Better performance

The iPhone 11 series uses a new and improved processor called the Apple A13 Bionic. It offers up to 20 percent higher performance than its predecessor the A12 Bionic while energy consumption has decreased by up to 40 percent. The phones are therefore noticeably faster than previous models, but without placing more strain on the battery.

Up to three rear cameras

As has long been rumoured, your new iPhone can now have up to three cameras on the back. The smallest model, the iPhone 11, has received an extra camera compared with the iPhone XR while the larger sibling models iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max have three cameras.

iPhone 11

  • Wide angle, 12 megapixels
  • Ultra wide angle, 12 megapixels
  • Front TrueDepth camera, 12 megapixels
  • Video recording in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second

iPhone 11 Pro

  • Wide angle, 12 megapixels
  • Ultra wide angle, 12 megapixels
  • Telephoto lens, 12 megapixels
  • Front TrueDepth camera, 12 megapixels
  • Video recording in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second

iPhone 11 Pro Max

  • Wide angle, 12 megapixels
  • Ultra wide angle, 12 megapixels
  • Telephoto lens, 12 megapixels
  • Front TrueDepth camera, 12 megapixels
  • Video recording in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second

Super Retina XDR

The entry-level iPhone 11 retains the old LCD screen from its predecessor the iPhone XR. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, however, have new, improved displays that Apple calls Super Retina XDR. It is basically an OLED panel with high brightness of up to 1,200 nits when viewing HDR content. The Super Retina XDR display supports the DCI-P3 colour gamut, has a high contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 and can display HDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Both the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max have a screen pixel density of 458 ppi. It is the highest ever in an Apple phone.

Longer battery life

Apple has significantly increased battery life in its new phones. At the time of writing we do not know whether it is larger batteries, more power-efficient hardware or a combination of both that provides the improvement.

  • iPhone 11 has one hour more battery life compared with the iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11 Pro has four hours longer battery life than the iPhone XS
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max has five hours longer battery life than the iPhone XS Max

Water-resistant design, WiFi 6 and improved Face ID

Among the more understated improvements are better water and dust resistance, support for WiFi 6, an included fast charger and improved Face ID technology.

IP68: The new models have a slightly better IP rating compared with last year’s iPhone models. The iPhone 11 series is IP68-rated instead of the previous IP67. That means the phones withstand 30 minutes at two metres depth. It is not something we recommend you try, but you can feel a bit more secure in heavy rain or if you drop your phone in the bathtub.

WiFi 6: With support for WiFi 6 (802.11ax) the new iPhone 11 models can take advantage of the benefits offered by the newer and more powerful WiFi 6 routers on the market. The technology is still new and is available in only a small number of router products. When you use an iPhone 11 with a WiFi 6 router you get higher performance, better security and lower power consumption than with older routers.

Fast charger: A fast charger is finally included, but only if you get an iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max. The more expensive models come with a faster 18W charger while the iPhone 11 instead gets the usual 5W charger that older models had in the box.

Face ID: Face recognition with Face ID has improved with support for recognition from wider angles. This makes it easier to use Face ID even when you are positioned further towards the edge of the camera’s field of view.

Dolby Atmos: All three models support the Dolby Atmos audio format. It is a high-resolution audio format that normally requires extra speakers in a home cinema system to create added height and depth in the sound. According to Dolby, Atmos on phones should give extra dynamics in audio and make dialogue easier to discern. You will never get a true Atmos feeling from a phone, but it is a welcome addition nonetheless.

Lacks USB-C and 5G

As expected, the iPhone 11 series lacks both 5G support and USB-C. It has previously been rumoured that Apple will not introduce any iPhone model with 5G support before 2020, so we will likely have to wait until September 2020 or 2021 before one is presented. Only a handful of phones on the market support 5G today and given the limited coverage it may not be surprising that the iPhone 11 series lacks it.

More surprising is that Apple does not use USB-C in its new Pro-branded models. Instead Apple continues to stick with the Lightning port – even though the company’s iPad Pro models have already switched to USB-C. There is hope that Apple will finally adopt USB-C with next year’s models, but whether that happens remains to be seen.

When will the price of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max go down?

If you can wait a few months there is a good chance that prices for all three models will have dropped. According to our price history this can be up to around 20 percent, or on average SEK 1,600, within three months.

By looking at the statistics for iPhone models released over the past four years we see that the smallest drop was SEK 791 and the largest as much as SEK 3,140. That was three months after launch. Those who want the latest phones but want to shop price-consciously should therefore hold back a little.

  • iPhone XR 64 GB : 8.3% price drop (SEK 791) within three months. (2018-09-16: SEK 9,495. 2018-12-14: SEK 8,704)
  • iPhone XS Max 64 GB : 22.4% price drop (SEK 3,140) within three months. (2018-09-14: SEK 13,990. 2018-12-16: SEK 10,850)
  • iPhone 8 64 GB : 13.7% price drop (SEK 1,096) within three months. (2017-09-16: SEK 7,995. 2017-11-25: SEK 6,899)
  • iPhone 7 32 GB : 20% price drop (SEK 1,500) within three months. (2016-09-16: SEK 7,490. 2017-12-24: SEK 5,990)
  • iPhone 6 64 GB : 17.3% price drop (SEK 1,491) within three months. (2015-09-12: SEK 8,590. 2015-12-16: SEK 7,099)

Note that the statistics apply to the models with the smallest amount of storage.
