Whether you've purchased a fitness tracker, a smart bracelet watch or a sports watch, some maintenance is required to prevent the expensive gadgets from failing prematurely. All manufacturers provide care instructions and we have summarised the main points in the article below.

Keep the fitness band dry and clean

Most fitness bands are designed to withstand some moisture but generally fare best in dry conditions. Always wipe your fitness band after a day of use or, preferably, after every workout. If you are very sweaty or have just showered, it is a good idea to wipe both your wrist and the tracker to ensure the heart-rate sensor (if present) works optimally and that the band is not left damp for extended periods.

Some fitness bands cannot be taken apart for cleaning and charging, but if possible you should ensure there is no moisture inside the band where the tracking module sits. Dirt and moisture can accumulate and create a breeding ground for bacteria, which may force you to replace the band entirely.

When wiping the device it is best to use a soft cloth and plain water . Avoid chemical cleaners unless absolutely necessary. If there is grime that requires chemicals, always consult the device manufacturer before applying any cleaning agents. The wrong product can, in the worst case, damage parts such as the band.

Use a screen protector

If your fitness band has a display, it is a good idea to buy a screen protector if one is not included. Some manufacturers use screen materials that scratch easily, which is unpleasant if you have only had the band for a few days. Buy the cheapest screen protectors you can find and cut them to the correct size for the display. It may look worse than having none, but at least the display is protected from scratches that over time can make it difficult to use.

Do not press buttons underwater

If you have a fitness band that is water-resistant, it is important not to press any buttons while the device is in contact with water. Each press creates a tiny movement that could, in the worst case, allow moisture to seep into the device. The smart wristwatch Pebble warned specifically about this risk, and we therefore consider it appropriate to point out the dangers for fitness bands as well. Check with the manufacturer what applies to your specific band before your next swim.

Update the software

Most fitness bands can connect to a smartphone or computer to update the software. New versions usually offer improved functionality and more accurate measurements, but sometimes include improvements affecting battery performance. With lower battery strain the battery can last longer, which is particularly important for models without replaceable batteries that require replacing the whole product or tracking unit. Always update to new software versions when prompted that one is available.

Avoid extreme environments

Avoid extreme environments when using a fitness band. It may seem obvious to remove the band before a sauna or tanning bed, but it is easy to forget the smallest, simplest models. You should also avoid using certain fitness bands while surfing or jumping from a diving board, as an improper impact with the water can damage the device. Jawbone is one manufacturer that warns specifically about this.

It is also advisable not to leave your fitness band in, for example, a sports bag or plastic bag with damp contents for extended periods — especially if you have a model with a heart-rate sensor. Models with metal clasps or charging contacts risk damage from oxidation, according to Polar.

When you will not be using the device for an extended period

If the fitness tracker will not be used for several weeks or months, there are a few points to consider. For example, store the device in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight.

Recommended storage temperatures vary by manufacturer and model, but avoid freezing conditions. Wrap the device in a protective material, such as a towel, if it must be left in a car during winter or in hot summers.
