[The review was updated in 200720 when the market for "Playstation Classic" has changed,-ONCE AGAIN !. Now it is apparently the case that it has stopped being manufactured and distributed altogether.]
A brief look back at its fluttering price history:
When the PS Classic was launched in the country last year, the initial price was 900 SEK. But when the knowledge of Sony's sleepy crumpled software in it took a turn for the worse, all previous pricing plummeted to about 400 SEK, and remained there. then it became widely known what great deeds could be achieved with the help of extensive (yet fairly easy-to-handle) unofficial firmware upgrades of its operating system, so the pendulum "struck back" once again, and prices rose again to upwards of eight hundred bucks.
O.k., a Playstation which, -different from div. Chinese "find devices" -, really IS a real "Sony" product.-It just CANNOT be wrong! ... Or?! ..
This product is difficult to rate, as "with" and "without" s.k. "firmware hacks", render two fundamentally different user experiences.
First of all: The hand control. "Exactly HOW retro should it really be?", One may ask. Sure, it IS iofs true that the original PS1 controller looked EXACTLY like this, anno 1994-95 !. BUT; already -97, the "Dual analog" controller came as standard, and from 1998 until the end, it was "DualShock" that applied (with vibration and everything!). -How many buyers of this "Playstation classic" think that they; ..// "" gladly sacrifice BOTH analog sticks, just to get the right nostalgic feeling from THE VERY, VERY OLDEST PS1 SYSTEMS! ... // " "??. "Personally, I consider it a huge case of misconception on Sony's part to send with two lever-free hand controls, no matter what their motive may have been (initially the store price was set at a full 900 bucks / 99 dollars, so just" cost reasons "are not sufficient as an explanation).
To top it all off, the length of the cord with them is a JOKE !. You will need AT LEAST one two-meter extension cord, = 4 meter extension, if it is to be for both !.
The console then ?. Yes, it is almost an EXACT REDUCTION of the original, almost "down to the smallest detail", as "Sickan" would have said !. It is extremely space-saving, and also both stylish and cool as an ornament. BUT: Why in the Lord's name does Sony not ship with an AC adapter ??. -Not even what is required for USB charging (= USB device plus cable) is included. This is a striking disrespect to their customers !.
Well, at least in Swedish, they are at least bidding on instructions in use, which more and more people are unfortunately shitting on, in today's situation (even if the Swedish part, as usual, is "stuck" in a telephone directory-thick "instruction bible", together with the same repetitive instruction book in Finnish , Urdu, Hebrew, Ukrainian and 23 more languages ..).
The user interface: It has been accused of being primitive, and certainly, it does not testify to any major degree of imagination or creative ability on the part of the developer. But I actually think it's quite okay anyway. It "does its job", s a s .A much bigger problem is that, when you are in a game and are tired, there is no way to get back to the home screen again with the help of the hand control !. With each game change, you are forced to go to the small, small console, and find the small, small button, which makes you come back "home" again !. -Can you ask for more than that, from one of the world's most leading and innovative technology companies ?. ANSWER YES !.
Picture and sound quality: I'm not an irrational person. I am tolerant of ev. error steps in the form of so-called "Glitches". I do not shout "Panic!" In a panicked manner, unless the game blindly obeys the hand control every time (not as long as the gaming experience is not threatened ialf). I'm not fussing about the fact that the stereo sound may not live up to CD quality at any given time.
-But I have a problem: When you play a 3D-based / first-person game, the computer power is not enough for both games and sensible resolution. You are suddenly in a pixelated mess, which admittedly is enough to play the game, but which does not give rise to any joy, moreover. And, sure; Maybe that's how it was when you played the same game in the 90's, and on CRT TV, so what is there to complain about?!. Anyway, the console allegedly ialf output the entire "720p" in resolution, which is more than enough to make games like this look / much nicer. In addition, my TV has at least as ambition, to upgrade incoming digital signals to as close to "Native 4K" as possible.-Could Sony have improved the clarity / resolution of these old games if they really wanted to? .Or is it so that the mushy image is "A PART OF THE RETRO EXPERIENCE" ?? .. Hmm ..
The games: Which games should be housed and not in retro consoles like this is an eternal discussion, every time a new one is released on the market. However, it can be stated that at least 90% of us who have reviewed or expressed opinions about "Playstation classic", consider that the game choices are completely up the walls !. Another source of general consensus seems to be the NUMBER of games, ie 20 pieces !. And of these 20, there are a paltry 3 games that I explicitly like in this lineup, as well as another 4-5 that are okay. But I would have paid the original price of 900: - (or, as later again, 800 :-) , so I would have been really angry now.-With the total price of less than half that I paid, it still feels acceptable.
Here, the review could have ended, with a three-star rating, and the text: "" Sony could have released a real smoker to the PS1 nostalgia console, but instead chose one half-hearted solution, with a half-hearted console, and a half-moldy content "". I had also repeated that you are forced to buy a power supply unit for USB, + a two-meter USB cable as an extension cable for the hand control, + possibly. another ditto to the other hand control ... -BUT!; ...
As many already know, the inside measurement under the console miniature's plastic is a REAL stormy weather for those who work with so-called "homebrews" online !. With instructions from websites and Youtube, anyone can throw out the old diaper for software and games from the box, and replace it with stuff that swings much nicer !. The wired and leverless controllers can then be replaced by those from PS2, Xbox or other. The home screen / user appearance is available in really torn versions. The old, dull PS1 games can be replaced with the ones YOU just want! .And; Last but not least, you can play games from OTHER consoles via emulator technology. And most remarkable in that context is "Sega Dreamcast", which originates from CONSOLE GENERATION 6! (PS1 is in itself, GENERATION 5! ..). Otherwise there are also older arcade games, SNES, Mega drive and a lot of other fun. "The community" IS ACTIVE, and offers and improvements are added continuously (but only in English).
With a few hundred bucks in addition, plus a few hours of tinkering with the computer, you can turn this "Playstation classic" into SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT, other than the wet yawn that Sony had imagined !. This must be included in a rating, but so must pricing. At the time of writing, there are still a handful of players selling it in the price ranges "from SEK 800 and up" .- Now it is the case that unofficial firmwares in the form of emulators, media player software, festive menu sets / pictures and (de facto illegal) game ISO / Roms, can be obtained on an innumerable number of OTHER platforms ALSO! .- An old Original "Xbox", a "Nintendo Wii" or a "Sony PSP" for example, can provide you with a little incomprehensible stuff , at a TOTAL PRICE of a loaf of cig! .In addition, it may be wise to take a look at what the "Raspberry Pi" community has to offer.
So: "800: - for a Playstation Classic ?? ..". Yes, maybe.-If you intend to run firmware on it, that is (Otherwise, MAX 200: -!). But it is not an obvious super find. And should the price hit the "thousand kroner ceiling" so, no, it is NOT SO amazing !.
My very last and final rating for "Playstation classic" hereby lands at just 6 stars! ..
Have a good time.
