More about the new mobile phones

Screens

The screen is a so-called Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a protective layer of Gorilla Glass on top. This technology is based on Super AMOLED with improvements that allow the screen to achieve HDR10+ certification. This means high brightness of up to 2,600 nits, better color reproduction, and higher contrast levels. You also get full coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. The "2X" suffix indicates that the refresh rate has increased from 60 Hz in Dynamic AMOLED to 120 Hz in Dynamic AMOLED 2X.

Performance

Beneath the screen lies the Exynos 2400 system chip from Samsung in the Galaxy S24 and S24+, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from Qualcomm is used in the S24 Ultra. It acts as both the brain and heart of the mobile phone, housing many of the key components such as radio circuits for 5G and WiFi, as well as a range of sensors. Both system chips are built with AI in mind and feature many innovations in the so-called NPU circuit that works with artificial intelligence. The system chips are also more efficient in handling image data from the cameras, have new gaming features, and enhanced audio quality.

Storage

The Galaxy S24 series offers between 128 GB and 1 TB of storage space. The amount of space available varies between models. The storage capacity you choose is permanent and cannot be expanded later, for instance, with a memory card.

You can opt for a cloud storage service to offload your important documents and pictures from the phone when needed. Keep in mind that the usable space is always significantly less than the specifications indicate. This is because the operating system occupies a large part that cannot be used for your own files.

WiFi, Bluetooth, and 5G

The hope before the launch was that all three phones would feature the latest WiFi 7. Unfortunately, only the most expensive model, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, boasts WiFi 7. The other two sibling models are equipped with "only" WiFi 6E.

WiFi 7 offers a theoretically higher maximum speed and shorter network delays. Practically, you might not notice a big difference, but it's still a shame to see this limitation. However, all three models do have Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi Direct, as well as support for 4G/5G.

The Cameras

One of the biggest distinguishing details between the Galaxy S24/S24+ and the S24 Ultra model is the cameras. All three have the same 12-megapixel selfie camera, but that's where the similarities end.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra boasts four rear cameras instead of just three. The extra camera is a stabilized telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and a 50-megapixel resolution. The main camera is upgraded to 200 megapixels, and the smaller telephoto lens with 3x zoom is also stabilized on the Ultra model (but not on the S24/S24+).

In the background, AI functions work to analyze and improve your pictures using the new system chip. Everything happens seamlessly without you having to do anything extra.

Battery and Charging

The Galaxy S24 has the smallest battery at just 4,000 mAh. With a compatible fast charger that supports 25 watts at 3A, you can get a 50% charge in just 30 minutes. With the Galaxy S24+ and S24 Ultra, you can reach 65% charge in the same time with a fast charger that supports 45 watts and 5A.

All three models support so-called reverse charging. This means you can place your Samsung headphones or smartwatch on the back of the phone to charge their batteries. Keep in mind that the exact battery capacity can vary slightly. From 3,880 mAh to 4,855 mAh is the accepted minimum level according to Samsung.

This is Galaxy AI

The biggest innovation with the Galaxy S24 series is the introduction of Galaxy AI. Simply put, Galaxy AI is a suite of features that use artificial intelligence to enhance your experience with the mobile phone.

These features are seamlessly integrated into the operating system and Samsung's own interface for Android, called OneUI.

For example, Galaxy AI can translate conversations and text in real time, ensuring you understand the other party, even if they don't speak the same language as you. There's no need for an extra app; the technology used is built into the phone's call app and keyboard.

There are also image tools that help you take the best possible photos and videos with the cameras. With a few clicks, you get tips and suggestions on how the software can fix issues like photos being too bright or dark, or having motion blur.

You can also create summaries of important notes with the Samsung Notes app. The AI interprets the content and highlights the most important information to make it easy to read. The same function can organize existing text and even transcribe audio in a straightforward manner.

To use Galaxy AI, you don't need to do anything special with your mobile phone. All that's required is that you have a Galaxy S24 model and that the software is updated.
