Finally, the Warcraft III Reforged is available for playing, a highly sought-after re-mastered edition of the classic Warcraft III game from 2002.
Blizzard presented the game already during the BlizzCon 2018 and planned to release the edition last year. Delays moved the release date back to the beginning of 2020, and now the game is available for purchase directly from Blizzard.
The sentiment of the game stays true to the original and blizzard says that they’ve mainly focused on improving the game’s visuals. The idea is that Warcraft III Reforged should give the player the same experience as when Warcraft III was released in 2002, but nicer looking and better adapted to today’s computers.
What is Warcraft III Reforged?
The Warcraft III Reforged is a new and improved edition of the classic Warcraft III game from 2002. The game is a type of real-time strategy game, where you as a player control four different races and famous heroes in the Warcraft world, to save Azeroth from the dreadlord Mal'Ganis.
The game picks up where its predecessor, Warcraft II, ended with 62 different challenging missions and online games against other players. A level editor and a mod support/tool is included for those of you who want to personalise the game and create your own levels to challenge others on.
- Revised graphics from scratch
- 62 missions of big parts of Azeroth
- More than 4 hours re-modelled cut scenes
- Hero-focused gaming style, so-called real-time strategy
- Four powerful races from the Warcraft story
- A variety of custom games to explore
- Support for mods – even for those for the original Warcraft III game
- Improved UI and balance
- Modern functions with Battle.net
- Old Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne are included
When will the Warcraft III Reforged be released?
Blizzard initially planned to release the game some time in 2019. However, the launch was put forward to the beginning of 2020. The Warcraft III Reforged can be played from 29 January 2020 and can be bought directly from Battle.net. At the time of writing the game is only available for PC but is scheduled to be released for gaming consoles some time in the future.
I want to play the classic Warcraft III – is that possible?
If you’d rather play the old classic Warcraft III it’s possible in two different ways. In the new Reforged edition there’s a setting for switching between the new and the old graphics. It allows you to quickly get the feel of Warcraft III, but without having to install the original game from 2002. If you’d rather go all the way and actually run the classic version, then it’s perfectly possible. Warcraft III and the The Frozen Throne expansion are included when you purchase Warcraft III Reforged. Also included is a level editor and a mod tool for those who want to try creating their own material for the game.
Has the Warcraft III Reforged support for mods?
Yes, the Warcraft III Reforged has support for mods. The original game used mods programmed in the script language JASS from Blizzard. This has today been replaced by the considerably easier to use and wide-spread Lua, which is also supported by World of Warcraft. You can use mods made with both JASS and Lua with Warcraft III Reforged. Keep in mind that there may be problems with really old mods for Warcraft III, although Blizzard says most things will work without difficulty.
Do I need to have played Warcraft I and II before playing Warcraft III?
Absolutely not. You can jump straight in to the Warcraft III story without problems. Having said that, there is an advantage to having played the older games, or World of Warcraft, to get more to grips with what is happening and why. It also gives you a better idea of who the characters are and what role they play in the Warcraft world.
How powerful a computer is required for Warcraft III Reforged?
The requirements for playing the Warcraft III Reforged are comparatively modest. Blizzard's minimum requirements include up to 10-year-old processors and graphics cards. The lowest screen resolution is just 800 x 600 pixels. If you have an older computer that meets the minimum requirements, you may want to upgrade for a better experience. The risk is otherwise that you will have poorer graphics quality, longer loading times between the levels and low fps with less smooth game play.
Where can I buy the Warcraft III Reforged?
Warcraft III Reforged is only sold via Blizzards own online shop on Battle.net. There are two editions, the Standard Edition and the Spoils of War Edition. The price for the normal version is 30 euros and the special edition costs 40 euros. The Spoils of War Edition contains extra items that can be used in other games from Blizzard, such as Diablo III and World of Warcraft.
